Analysis Of Jack Londons The Call Of The Wild - 891 Words

Would you expect an animal who loves both humans but feels an instinct to leave for the wild to choose one? Throughout the first few chapters in Jack Londons novel, The Call of the Wild, the grim struggle between civilization and the instinctive call is shown throughout the perilous journey of Buck. Buck, the protagonist, is facing a dilemma, being pulled between civilization and the wild. The force that’s pulling Buck towards civilization is a strong one. Buck encounters different events that influence his thoughts and views of civilization. At the beginning of the book, he is very happy to be at Judge Miller’s place, for he was living the life any dog would wish for. For example, on page 12 he referred to himself as â€Å". . . king over all†¦show more content†¦These events changed Buck and encouraged him to be with mankind and civilization. Throughout the novel, Buck was tempted to answer the call, the call of the wild. His first experience with the wild also occurs in the beginning of the novel. The man in the red sweater makes Buck understand â€Å"A man with a club was a lawgiver... one must kill or be killed. â€Å"He was beaten (he knew that); but he was not broken. He saw, once and for all, that he stood no chance against a man with a club.† (16). After this encounter Buck changed his disposition . He no longer was friendly around men but instead became cunning in the way he acted and thought when around them, One night when Buck was laying by the fire, he had a vision about a caveman and himself. â€Å". . . as he crouched by this other fire he saw another and different man from the half-breed cook before him.† (40). As Buck is transforming into a wild dog, the need of his primordial ways strengthens. When Buck continues having the visions, they start to get more intense showing that he is going t hrough reversion and becoming less domesticated. During his time in the wild, he slowly transformed and looked like an enormous wolf that moves like a hunter; a killer, representing the impact of the wild on Buck.
